Reference Library

Anodizing Standards, Textbooks & Research — Citation Library

A curated library of public-literature references for aluminium anodizing, hard anodizing, surface finishing, and powder coating. Standards, textbooks, peer-reviewed research, and industry resources — annotated and linked to source.

This reference library catalogues the public-literature sources we use as the citation base for our consulting work and published content. Each entry includes the source title, issuer or authors, year, an annotated abstract, and a link to the official source. Where access is paywalled (most ASTM, ISO, AAMA, and SAE standards), the listed URL is the official publisher page for purchase or institutional access.

Scope: 30 curated sources across 9 categories. The library is maintained by Saravana Consultancy as the citation base for our consulting and content. We add new sources as new claims need to be supported; existing entries are re-verified annually.

Categories

Indian Standards (BIS)
Bureau of Indian Standards specifications for aluminium surface treatment. These are the controlling standards for anodizing and surface finishing on Indian fabricator projects, including BIS certification, government tenders, and Indian architectural specifications.
4 sources
US Military & Aerospace Specifications
US Department of Defense and aerospace-industry specifications for aluminium anodizing. Used internationally for defence components, aerospace structural parts, and high-reliability industrial applications. The most-cited is MIL-A-8625, which defines Type I, II, and III anodize chemistries.
3 sources
ASTM International Standards
ASTM International test methods and specifications for anodic coatings, coating thickness measurement, hardness, corrosion resistance, and abrasion. These standards are referenced globally as the test methods of record for anodize QC.
8 sources
ISO & EN Standards
International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and European Norm (EN) standards for anodic coatings. ISO 7599 is the general specifying standard for anodic oxidation coatings; EN 12373 covers anodic oxidation in the European market.
4 sources
AAMA Architectural Standards
American Architectural Manufacturers Association standards for anodic and powder coatings on architectural aluminium. AAMA 611 governs anodic coatings; AAMA 2603/2604/2605 govern powder coating performance tiers. Widely referenced in international architectural specifications.

Textbooks & Major References
Foundational and current textbooks on aluminium surface treatment. These are the references most-cited in the peer-reviewed literature and used as teaching texts in materials engineering and surface engineering programs.
3 sources
Peer-Reviewed Research Papers
Selected high-impact peer-reviewed papers on aluminium anodizing electrochemistry, alloy effects, sealing kinetics, and surface treatment process science. Each paper is annotated with its specific contribution and the parameter claims it supports.
3 sources
Industry Association Resources
Technical bulletins, white papers, and published guidance from industry associations including the Aluminum Anodizers Council (AAC), International Aluminium Institute, and similar bodies. These resources are typically peer-reviewed within the association and serve as practitioner-facing canonical references.

Manufacturer Technical Bulletins
Well-cited technical bulletins and datasheets from chemistry suppliers and process licensors (Henkel/Bonderite, Sanford Process Corp, etc.). Included only when the bulletin is referenced in peer-reviewed literature or industry standards, not for promotional content.
